ShipTek 2008

Marine BizTV, the world's only Global Maritime TV Channel and Aries Marine, the largest Ship Design and Consultancy firm in the Middle East organised ShipTek 2008, the International Conference on Shipbuilding and Conversion Technology. It was held from 29 - 30 April 2008 attracting the marine attention to the Queen of Arabian Sea, Cochin, India.

Chemical tanker Gulf Fanatir joins Gulfnav fleet

Gulf Navigation Holding has announced that it has taken delivery of the Gulf Fanatir a newly built vessel constructed at the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan, South Korea.

Contracted at a cost of US$54.35m the ship is the first of a series of four sophisticated chemical carriers ordered by Gulf Navigation. With deadweight of 46,200 metric tonnes, a capacity of 54,300 cubic metres, 20 specially coated cargo tanks and classed as an IMO Type II chemical carrier she will have the capability of carrying a broad range of petrochemical products. The vessel after delivery will be handed over to International Shipping Company, a subsidiary of SABIC on a fifteen year time charter. This is the first of four vessels that will be chartered to SABIC for fifteen years.

Second International Maritime Video awards and the launch of DAM

The second international maritime video awards and the launch of the first Hollywood movie by the mariners ‘DAM’ was held on 30 April 2008 at Hotel Le Meridien, Kochi.

The second day of conference was resumed at 9.00am. The topics included in the first session were Conversion of Single Hull Tankers, Some Major Design Aspects of FPSO Conversion, Opportunities & Challenges in Rigs and Repair & Upgrade of Drilling Rigs. There was also a special presentation on Role of Visual Media in the Maritime Industry. The second annual international maritime video awards started at 6.00 pm at Hotel Le Meridien. The winners for the best maritime videos were honored with Marine BizTV video awards. The venue also witnessed the launch of ‘DAM’, the first Hollywood movie venture from the marine industry and a prestigious project of the Aries Group, along with the first anniversary celebration of Marine BizTV and the tenth anniversary celebration of Aries Marine. The thespian actor, Shri.Madhu along with one of the best directors of the time, Shri T.V. Chandran were the special invitees for the mega award nite. Distinguished personalities of many prominent institutions and societies of the marine industry gathered for the mega award nite. There were 26 award categories included this year. Fifteen award categories came under the People’s Choice Awards and the remaining eleven categories came under the Maritime Excellence Award. The lifetime achievement award for maritime service was given to Dr. Dong Shik Shin, Chairman and Founder, Korea Maritime Consultant Co. Ltd., who is also known as the ‘Father of Korean Shipbuilding’. The lifetime achievement award for the maritime entrepreneurship was given away to the father of Ship Management, Capt. C.A.J Vanderperre, Founder & CEO, Univan Ship Management, Hong Kong. The lifetime achievement award for maritime academics was bagged by Prof. Erno Eugen Wieback.

Aker Yards in Russian shipyard talks

Norway's Aker Yards is in talks with the Russian bank.

The Russian bank controls Vyborg Shipyard as well as Summa Capital and Gzaprom Oil in the port of Primorsk to create a US$1 billion super-shipyard in Russia. The project could be sited on the north-west coast of Russia.

The Dazzling Award Nite

The Annual International Maritime Video Awards for the year 2008 was held at the grand ‘Hotel Le Meridien’, Kochi. This is the second appearance of the prestigious maritime video awards after the captivating mega launch ceremony and the first maritime video awards that took place at Hotel Crowne Plaza, Dubai.

The mega nite started with Rudraveena by Vaikkom Vijayalakshmi. This was followed by many dazzling performances which included the traditional art forms of Kerala like Kadhakali, Panchavadyam etc. and many other art forms representing the states of India. The invitees for the award nite were greeted with Thalappoli.

Distinguished personalities of many prominent institutions and societies of the marine industry and film industry gathered for the mega award nite. The gathering was addressed by Mr. Sohan Roy, the visionary and master brain behind Marine BizTV. There were 26 award categories included this year. Fifteen award categories came under the People’s Choice Awards and the remaining eleven categories came under the Maritime Excellence Award.

The venue also witnessed the launch of ‘DAM’, the first Hollywood movie venture from the marine industry and a prestigious project of the Aries Group, along with the first anniversary celebration of Marine BizTV and the tenth anniversary celebration of Aries Marine. The thespian actor, Mr. Madhu along with one of the best directors of the period, Mr. T.V. Chandran were the special invitees for the mega award nite. Both of them together cut the ribbon and launched DAM.

The lifetime achievement award for maritime academics was bagged by Prof. Erno Eugen Wieback, Rostock University, Germany, who is known as the “Father of Ship technology Department-CUSAT”. Altogether, the mega award nite offered an enthralling visual treat for all.
