Essar Shipping bids for Bulgarian shipping company

The Ruias-controlled Essar Shipping and Logistics (ESLL) is among the three bidders for Bulgaria’s Navigation Maritime Bulgare (Navibulgar), a shipping company wholly-owned by the government.


The 106-year-old shipping major is valued at around $700 million. The companies that have submitted letters of interest for a majority stake in Navibulgar to Cyprus-registered ESLL, Chartworld Shipping Corporation of Greece and a consortium of Bulgarian firm KG Maritime Shipping and Martrade Shipping Transport of Germany. Navibulgar operates a fleet of 72 vessels with a total capacity of over 1.3 million dwt.

Nexen join hands with Pemex

Canada’s Nexen said it had signed a general collaboration agreement with Mexican state oil company Pemex covering training as well as deep-water oil and gas exploration and coal-bed methane production.


The deal, signed between local units of Nexen and Pemex, is the first co-operation agreement signed by a Canadian company, Nexen said. Mexican law prohibits Pemex from sharing the risk of exploration with other foreign or state-owned companies. Pemex is struggling the replace lagging production at its existing offshore production facilities. The state oil company has however signed similar agreements covering scientific and technological co-operation with Norway’s Statoil, Brazil’s Petrobras and UK supermajor BP.

BAE Systems wins $19m contract

BAE Systems has won a $19 million contract from the U.S. Navy’s Southwest Regional Maintenance Center to refurbish and upgrade the ARCO (ARDM-5) floating drydock.


The new contract will serve the Navy’s new Virginia-class nuclear-powered fast attack submarines. The company will perform drydocking and pierside work on the ARCO at both Naval Base Point Loma and BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair. Work on the ARCO includes painting the drydock’s underwater hull, sides and tanks, reinforcing structural bulkheads, replacing and renewing switchboards, and upgrading the automated docking and centering system. All work is scheduled for completion in June 2008. The ARCO measures 492 feet long, 98 feet wide and has a lifting capacity of 7,800 long tons.

Ship carrying 42 children returns safely to Long Beach

Rescuers went to the aid of a leaking tall ship carrying 42 children Friday afternoon about six miles off the coast of Long Beach.


The 130-foot schooner, American Pride, began taking on water sometime around noon. Fire crews and U.S. Coast Guard boats were sent to the scene to assist, and no injuries had been reported. The ship was headed back to Rainbow Harbor, where additional crews were headed to help off-load passengers. No one had to be evacuated from the ship and it was never at risk of sinking. The ship is scheduled to sail this weekend during the 18th annual Buccaneer Days at Two Harbors at Catalina Island.

Petrobras steps up at Gulf sale

Brazil's state oil company Petrobras said it had snapped up 26 blocks in the US Gulf of Mexico for $108 million in the US Minerals Management Service’s lease sale.

The company bought the rights for 20 blocks on its own and for six blocks in partnership with Devon Energy. Two of these will be Petrobras-operated. Petrobras said it sought to consolidate its position in areas of the Gulf where it already has exploration activities, particularly in deep-water and ultra deep-water tracts like Walker Ridge. Petrobras has 338 blocks in the Gulf, of which it operates 200.

Horizon Lines orders 1,200 shipping containers

Horizon Lines Inc. will take delivery of 1,200 new, 45-foot shipping containers this month.



The containers will allow customers to ship more cargo without having to modify existing operations. The delivery is part of the company's equipment-investment program. Since the start of the year, Horizon Lines has ordered 2,200 dry containers. The company also has added more than 1,000 refrigerated containers, about 235 flat racks and five Hunter-Class container vessels.The Charlotte-based company structured its transportation and logistics operations under two subsidiaries, Horizon Lines LLC and Horizon Logistics.

Riyadh to host third Opec summit

Saudi Arabia will host the third summit of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) from Nov 17 in Riyadh.


The first summit was held in 1975 in Algeria and the second in 2000 in Venezuela. Opec members include Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Angola, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela. The agenda of the two-day summit will not only focus on energy markets and related issues, but also environmental protection topics. Saudi oil minister Ali Al-Naimi said embracing the summit confirms that the Kingdom remains committed to stability in world oil markets.
