Austal’s US operation located in Mobile, Alabama, celebrated the start of work on its Modular Manufacturing Facility with a groundbreaking ceremony on July 31, 2008.
Located on Dunlap Drive, just south of Addsco Road, the MMF project when complete will include 700,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space, 80,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space, and 60,000 sq. ft. of office space. The MMF expansion will be constructed in two phases and will ultimately accommodate a total workforce of up to 1,200 personnel in the new buildings. The state-of-the-art facility will be capable of constructing six large aluminum vessels such as the Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and/or Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) per year. Gray Construction, located in Birmingham, Alabama, is managing the construction for Austal and will oversee all activities related to completion of the site. S J & L, Inc., of Mobile, will perform the earthwork, grading, curbing, paving and associated wet utilities for the project. Other local contractors involved in the expansion effort have included Dees Engineering, who completed the site design, and Thompson Engineering who performed the geotechnical testing. Austal submitted its final Phase II Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) submission to the US Navy this week following an extensive detailed design and review process. Austal was one of three bidders awarded a Phase I contract in January and it is anticipated that a single Phase II contract will be awarded in late 2008 for the construction of up to ten ships. Jubarte field production slated to begin
Petrobras President José Sergio Gabrielli de Azevedo confirmed that production from the first pre-salt well in the Jubarte field in Brazil's offshore Campos Basin will begin next month.
Initial production is expected at 10,000 b/d; the well is interconnected to platform P-34, which went online in late 2006. Speaking at a press conference in London, Gabrielli also said long duration testing at Tupi, located offshore Brazil in the Santos Basin, is scheduled to take place in March 2009. The pilot project will take place in 2010, with initial production estimated to reach 100,000 b/d of oil and some 3.5 MMcm/d (123.6 MMcf/d).

US Coast Guard vessel christened 'Waesche' after legendary Admiral
More than 1,000 guests were present at the recent christening ceremony of ‘Waesche’, a Northrop Grumman-built vessel for the US Coast Guard.
The vessel was named for Adm Russell R Waesche, the first Coast Guard commandant to achieve the rank of admiral. He led the Coast Guard from 1936 to 1946, which is the longest tenure of any USCG commandant. ‘Waesche’ is the second ship in the new Legend-class of technologically advanced multi-mission cutters for the US Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security. The new 127-metre vessel has a 4,300 tonne displacement at full load. The vessel is powered by twin screw combined diesel and gas turbine power propulsion plants, and is designed to travel at a maximum speed of 28 knots.

Drydocks World increases Asian presence
Following its acquisition of the Pan United and Labroy yards in Singapore and Indonesia’s Batam Island, Drydocks World opened new regional headquarters in Singapore last week.
The subsidiary of Dubai World intends to use the four yards to establish a foothold in the rapidly expanding offshore construction sector. The yards specialize in shipbuilding, conversion, offshore rig construction and ship repair. Drydocks World is set to begin construction of a new yard in Batam on a 174ha greenfield site in September. The facility will be equipped with a ship lift to serve multiple dry berths for newbuilding and repair. The group is also reported to be in the final stage of negotiations for the purchase of a shipyard in China’s Shanghai area.

TTI Algeciras is the Algeciras-based company founded by the South Korean corporation, Hanjin Shipping, to run the terminal. The concession comprises the occupation and operation of a 292,910 metre-square surface area, made up of a 57,990 square metre manoeuvring zone and two quaylines of 650 metres (east) and 550 metres (north). TTI Algeciras is set to build a public container terminal under a semi-automatically managed model, which implies that quayside cranes are to be manually controlled, whereas yard cranes are to be controlled remotely. He will be taking on the professional support of the classification society's 1,000 surveyors in over 77 countries. In future, the qualified naval architect and marine technology expert will appoint new technical surveyors, monitor their work and further develop new rules for the construction and operation of ships. Norbert Kray started his career at the Bremer Vulkan shipyard and moved to Germanischer Lloyd in 1997. To begin with, he worked in the Analysis of Hull Structures and Damages; later he was deputy head of GL's Damage and Repair Management. Since 2002, Kray has represented GL in committees of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). Starting in 2006, Norbert Kray headed up the Technical Support department, and was hence also responsible for Germanischer Lloyd's Emergency Response Service (ERS). Owing to the considerable demand for comprehensive technical support in cases of average, he founded the GL Gdansk Engineering Services in Poland in January 2007 and assumed the technical management for the preparation of computer models of the registered vessels.
