More than 1,000 guests were present at the recent christening ceremony of ‘Waesche’, a Northrop Grumman-built vessel for the US Coast Guard.
The vessel was named for Adm Russell R Waesche, the first Coast Guard commandant to achieve the rank of admiral. He led the Coast Guard from 1936 to 1946, which is the longest tenure of any USCG commandant. ‘Waesche’ is the second ship in the new Legend-class of technologically advanced multi-mission cutters for the US Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security. The new 127-metre vessel has a 4,300 tonne displacement at full load. The vessel is powered by twin screw combined diesel and gas turbine power propulsion plants, and is designed to travel at a maximum speed of 28 knots.

Camper & Nicholsons Marinas receive handover of Turkish site
The handover of Cesme Marina located in the Izmir peninsula has taken place – with the Turkish Government officially passing the facility onto Camper & Nicholsons Marinas.
The marina is currently being redeveloped to bring it up to the standards you would expect from one of the world’s most prestigious yachting business names. Cesme Marina, situated in the Aegean Sea, offers one of the world’s most beautiful cruising grounds. Currently undergoing redevelopment, the marina is set in a natural harbour and presently offers 180 berths up to 30m in length. When complete in Spring 2009, capacity will be increased to 375 berths and will accommodate yachts up to 60m in length. All marine technical facilities will be provided and services will include fuel as well as fresh water and electricity. An 80 ton travel hoist will also be available for haul-out, along with technical support for yacht maintenance, engine repairs and electronics. As an ideal location with access to spectacular areas in the Aegean, with Chios, Samos and Lesvos close enough for a weekend cruise, Cesme is also ideal for day sailing – where quiet and secluded anchorages can readily be found. The marina is a 45 minute drive from an international airport in Izmir and is located right at the western end of the Izmir peninsula with easy access 24 hours a day in all weather conditions.

Port of Algeciras Bay Authority grants license to build third container terminal
The Port of Algeciras Bay Authority’s Board of Administration has granted a license to Total Terminal International Algeciras to build and run what is set to be the third container terminal at the Port of Algeciras Bay, Spain.
It is to be located on the Phase A plot of the Isla Verde Exterior expansion area. TTI Algeciras is the Algeciras-based company founded by the South Korean corporation, Hanjin Shipping, to run the terminal. The concession comprises the occupation and operation of a 292,910 metre-square surface area, made up of a 57,990 square metre manoeuvring zone and two quaylines of 650 metres (east) and 550 metres (north). TTI Algeciras is set to build a public container terminal under a semi-automatically managed model, which implies that quayside cranes are to be manually controlled, whereas yard cranes are to be controlled remotely. TTI Algeciras forecasts that business activity should commence at its container terminal in mid 2010.

Germanischer Lloyd's new Chief Surveyor is Norbert Kray (42).
He will be taking on the professional support of the classification society's 1,000 surveyors in over 77 countries. In future, the qualified naval architect and marine technology expert will appoint new technical surveyors, monitor their work and further develop new rules for the construction and operation of ships. Norbert Kray started his career at the Bremer Vulkan shipyard and moved to Germanischer Lloyd in 1997. To begin with, he worked in the Analysis of Hull Structures and Damages; later he was deputy head of GL's Damage and Repair Management. Since 2002, Kray has represented GL in committees of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). Starting in 2006, Norbert Kray headed up the Technical Support department, and was hence also responsible for Germanischer Lloyd's Emergency Response Service (ERS). Owing to the considerable demand for comprehensive technical support in cases of average, he founded the GL Gdansk Engineering Services in Poland in January 2007 and assumed the technical management for the preparation of computer models of the registered vessels.

World's oldest workboat celebrates 200th birthday with Raymarine refit
Built in 1808 ‘Boadicea’, an original Maldon Oyster Smack, is the oldest workboat still afloat in Europe.
This year, celebrating her 200th birthday, ‘Boadicea’ will be sailing the UK waters attending events and races, including the Myst Classic Race next month. Navigating from port to port will be far easier in 2008 as Raymarine has equipped the historic boat with the latest high-tech marine navigation and communications instruments. An ST70 colour instrument system will provide information on boat speed and water depth. In addition, for navigation and route planning, there is a C Series multifunction display combining chartplotter and GPS (Global Positioning System) information overlaid on electronic “maps” of the sea and coastline to show the vessel’s position at all times. To ensure clear communications can be made to and from the boat, a Ray55E VHF radio has been installed. “Previously we have had to navigate with paper charts and an echo sounder which has been concerning at times,” said owner Reuben Frost. Having spent over 100 years as a commercial working boat, ‘Boadicea’ was acquired by the Frost family who have now owned her for 70 years.

New container crane to be built at Muuga port
Muuga container terminal will start using a unique crane, meant for processing railway platforms with containers, in September.
“This unique crane is connected to developing railway transit of containers. Since 2007, a container freight train from our terminal regularly travels on the route Muuga-Moscow. The new crane will make the work in this direction even more effective,” explained the chairman of the board of Muuga CT, Sergei Artjomov. The investment plan of terminal Muuga CT foresees not only building and assembling a new crane but also expanding railway infrastructure. Alongside assembling the crane, construction of crane paths and installation of the reloading area of containers are taking place. Terminal Muuga CT has invested nearly EEK 90,000,000 into acquiring and assembling the crane and carrying out appropriate constructions. Sergei Artjomov said that despite numerous problems, the railway transit of containers will expand in the future.
