Posidonia Video Awards 2008

Posidonia 2008, International Shipping Exhibition had participants from 1729 companies representing all over the world. Discussions about the products and services between the exhibitors and the corporate, technical and operations management was included in this event.

Marine BizTV has decided to give an Award for the Best Video that's presented during this exhibition. So as part of this, we have collected videos from the interested companies. Videos are categorized in to different sections so that a viewer will be able to rate it. The voting lines are open to the delegates who participated in Posidonia Exhibition and Marine BizTV viewers.

The Awards will be distributed during Shiptek 2009, International Conference on Shipbuilding and Conversion Technology, 6-7 May, Singapore.

How to rate the videos?
  1. Videos are categorized in to corporate video, services, equipment, tourism and environment, ship registry and education and training.
  2. Select any category; the nominees will be listed out there.
  3. Watch the videos and rate it as awesome, pretty cool, worth watching, nothing special or poor. The best three video awards will be decided according to this rating.

Zhoushan to boast China’s largest iron ore transhipment terminal

Wuhan Iron and Steel Group Co has signed an agreement with Ningbo Port Group and Zhejiang Herun Industry Group to build a $350m iron ore terminal in Zhoushan, Shanghai.

WSICO will own the majority 51% stake in the project, while Ningbo Port Group and Zhejiang Herun Industry Group will hold a 25% and 24% stake respectively. The terminal will have an annual capacity of 30m tonnes and boast four berths (1x3000,000 tonnes, 1x50,000 tonnes and 2x10,000 tonnes) and two stacking yards. WISCO believes that upon completion, it will be largest iron ore transhipment terminal in China.

Wärtsilä-Hyundai JV Wins Big Order

Wärtsilä-Hyundai Engine Company Ltd., the new joint venture between Wärtsilä and Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, received a major order which calls for a total of 16 Wärtsilä 50DF engines for four ships to be built by Samsung Heavy Industries.

The contract also includes an option of four more engines for a fifth vessel. The order is recorded in the order book of Wärtsilä-Hyundai Engine Company Ltd. The engines are to be installed on so called Floating Production Storage Offloading (FPSO) vessels ordered by FLEX LNG. The first engine will be delivered in February 2010. The Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engine represents a pioneering industry change from traditional steam turbine machinery to a dual-fuel-electric concept with the benefits of much better operating economy and lower exhaust emissions. The engine can run on either natural gas, marine diesel oil (MDO) or on heavy fuel oil (HFO). Furthermore, the engine can smoothly switch between fuels during engine operation and is designed to give the same output regardless of the fuel used.

Asian Shipping and Work Boat Forum to focus on the OSV and Tug and barge markets

The Offshore Service Vessel and Tug and Barge markets in Southeast Asia will form the focus for the sixth Asian Shipping and Work Boat Forums to be held at Suntec Singapore from 24-25 February 2009.

The OSV sector, which has witnessed unprecedented growth during the past five years, has influenced other work boat and tug and barge activity with an enormous number of new vessels having been built and more under construction. The objective of the ASEAN OSV and Tug and Barge Forums is to help owners and operators of and suppliers to OSVs, tugs and barges, their designers and builders, to see into the future and to plan accordingly. The audience will comprise senior managers of OSV and tug and barge owning and operating companies, their customers in the offshore oil, and gas exploration and production companies, and, the suppliers to and regulators of both groups. The aim is to create better, more economical, more efficient and more environmentally friendly vessels and to be able to operate them so as to maximise the benefits of those very important qualities. ASWB is already 70 per cent sold a full eight months ahead of the event which takes place over three days at Suntec Singapore from 24-26 February 2009. Last year’s ASWB 2007 drew more than 3,000 de-duplicated attendees during the three day exhibition.

Salvors refloat grounded chemical carrier off Dutch tourist beach

Independent Dutch towage and salvage company Multraship and Belgian salvage operator URS Salvage & Maritime Contracting have refloated an Italian-flag chemical carrier which grounded off the Dutch coast on July 31.

The 5,045GT ‘Rubino’ grounded off a popular tourist beach at Zoutelande just after high tide. Bathers and swimmers were ordered out of the water to safety. The salvors, operating under an LOF agreement and working in close co-operation with the local authorities, mobilized an expert salvage team and three tugs, with others standing by, to refloat the vessel, which was thereafter towed to the Scheldepoort shipyard for inspection. No severe damage was found, and the vessel has been redelivered to its owners.

North Sea duster for StatoilHydro

Norwegian oil and gas group StatoilHydro has come up dry in a wildcat well sunk on Production Licence (PL) 128 in the North Sea.

The well, 6608/11-6, was targeting oil in middle and lower Jurassic sediments about 15 kilometres north-east of the Norne field. The bore was drilled to 1828 metres in water depth of 379 metres by the semi-submersible rig Ocean Vanguard. The well will be plugged and abandoned and the rig will move to spud the wildcat 34/7-33 on PL 089, which is also operated by StatoilHydro.

Olympics impact shipping at Qingdao

China has placed a floating security cordon around the port of Qingdao where Olympic Games sailing events will be held, restricting the entry of cargo ships, limiting speeds and stepping up surveillance patrols.

Passenger ships passing through the port were the subject of particularly close examination and safety checks, said Ministry of Transport spokesman He Jianzhong. A fleet of 62 patrol boats was in place on Wednesday before the sailing tournament from August 9 to 21, the agency stated.
