Raymarine sponsors Torbay regatta

Raymarine has been announced as a day sponsor of the first Ocean BMW Torbay Week.

The marine electronics manufacturer will sponsor the events taking place on the Saturday of the main Torbay championship with prizes and a substantial financial package worth. The brand new event is attracting vast amounts of interest from sponsors – among other companies to see the benefits of the event are National Boat Shows which is sponsoring the dinghy national championships held as part of Ocean BMW Torbay Week. Among the local companies which have signed up are Pedros Yacht Refinishing. Bayside Marine and Michelmores Solicitors. Tim Whitehead, race director for Ocean BMW Torbay Week, said: "Raymarine are sponsoring the Saturday for the IRC, sportsboat and keelboat classes with a superb sponsorship package. To have Raymarine, which is recognized as one of the world leaders in marine electronics, as a major sponsor in our first year of the Ocean BMW Torbay Week is a great success for the event." The six-day event will replace Torbay’s existing sailing regattas – Babbacombe, Royal Torbay, Paignton and Brixham – and will take place between Friday 22nd and Wednesday 27th August 2008, featuring a three-day championship for all classes, the traditional RNLI pursuit race and a two day Admiral’s Cup team event and is designed to appeal to all, whether they are serious racers or those with more limited racing experience. Ocean BMW Torbay Week will not only provide world-class racing for yachts and dinghies in the Tor Bay area but also a full schedule of après-sailing entertainment around the Bay’s three harboursides.

Belwan port earmarked for expansion

The Indonesian port of Belawan in North Sumatra is to receive a $130 m loan from the Islamic Development Bank for expansion into a hub port.

A large percentage of loan will be used to fund the expansion of the port's container terminal unit including land reclamation and quay construction. The port authorities hope that the expansion would put Belawan in a better position to compete with other ports in this region such as Singapore.

Fifth product tanker launched at Aker Philadelphia

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, USA, has launched Hull 009, the fifth in a series of twelve product tankers to be completed by 2011 and sold to American Shipping Company.

Late last week the 46,000DWT vessel was floated off its blocks and transferred from the building dock to the outfitting dock. While in the outfitting dock, testing, commissioning and onboard work will continue until the vessel embarks on sea trials, where it will be thoroughly tested prior to delivery to American Shipping Company and subsequent bareboat charter to OSG America. Hull 009 has been modified to incorporate three improved diesel-powered electrical generating sets to power the vessel’s electrical system. These diesel engines comply with the Environmental Protection Agency’s latest Tier II requirements. When in operation these new engines will produce lower levels of pollutants such as NOx, SOx, than previous versions. The vessel’s emergency diesel generator, hydraulic power packs, and rescue and lifeboat engines have all been upgraded as well.

Odense delivers 'Maren Maersk'

Odense Steel Shipyard presented its latest newbuilding, a 7,000TEU container ship to the AP Moller-Maersk Group last weekend at Denmark.

The new vessel was named ‘Maren Maersk’. ‘Maren Maersk’ is the third ship in a series of six container ships. The ship is designed and built to meet the highest demands for safe, precise, environmentally friendly and economic transportation of goods all over the globe. Among other things, a waste heat recovery system is installed to optimize the use of the energy produced. ‘Maren Maersk’ is a highly-automated ship, thoroughly monitored by advanced computer systems to ensure an optimal and efficient operation. To minimize the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions the twelve-cylinder Wärtsilä RT-flex diesel engine has been optimized for a more efficient and economical service speed. The propulsion machinery on ‘Maren Maersk’ develops 62,640kW.

Koreans nab Chinese shipbuilding spy

The Korea Times reported that Busan authorities have recently arrested a Chinese national for stealing core research technology on crude drill platforms.

The apprehended man works for a US classification society in Korea. This is the first time that South Korea will prosecute a foreigner in the name of “technology thievery”. The 35 year-old Chinese man was sent to a Samsung Heavy Industries yard located in the city of Geoje-si. Korean Authorities claim that he illegally copied over 1,540 documents concerning the technology about deep-sea crude drilling platforms and LNG ships to his own laptop. Samsung has spent over ten years, and millions of dollars on these technologies, besides the 3,000 personnel employed to conduct the research. Though the Chinese man is employed by a US classification society, he went to the Samsung yard, following orders issued by a Chinese state-owned shipping company. According to Korean media, there are another two Chinese workers in Samsung and Hyundai under suspicion for stealing shipbuilding technologies about large capacity container ships and LNG ships. Since 2004, Korea has dealt with six cases of crime concerning foreign business spies.
