Singapore business events players honoured at this year’s Singapore Business Events Awards

The Singapore Tourism Board announced the seven winners of this year’s Singapore Business Events Awards at a gala event held at the Shangri-La Hotel Singapore.

Selected by a distinguished panel of international judges are recognised for their outstanding contribution to the Singapore business events industry, these winners in 2007, which has helped Singapore to maintain its lead as a Business Travel, meetings, incentive travel, conventions and exhibitions (BTMICE) destination. The Singapore Business Events Awards were launched last year as part of the STB’s industry development efforts to boost the Singapore business events industry’s professionalism, innovation and creativity and raise its service excellence benchmark. In its second year, the Awards aim to highlight exemplary business events, organisations and individuals who have raised the industry’s profile and demonstrated excellence in creativity, innovation, business and service excellence in the preceding year. At the ceremony, seven awards were bestowed on exemplary industry players ranging from Professional Conference Organisers (PCO), Professional Exhibition Organisers (PEO) and Destination Management Companies (DMC) to venues (such as exhibition/conference venues, hotels), freight forwarders and other related companies such as stand contractors, AV, production and staging companies. The winners were chosen for their ability to deliver world-class business events and their contribution to bolstering Singapore’s position as a premier Business Travel and MICE destination.

Pride International to construct ultra-deepwater drillship

Pride International has placed an order for the construction of a fourth advanced-capability, ultra-deepwater drillship in Houston, USA.

The latest drillship, like the company's three previously announced projects, will be constructed at the Samsung Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Geoje, South Korea and is expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2011. The new drillship, to be named at a later date is based on an SHI proprietary hull design measuring 230-metres-long, 42.6-metres-wide, and offering a pay load in excess of 20,000 tonnes. The unit is designed for drilling in water depths of up to 3,660 metres, with a total vertical drilling depth of 12,190 metres, and will have off-line tubular stand building capabilities, as well as feature dynamic positioning in compliance with DPS-3 certification. The rig, which will be initially equipped for drilling in water depths of up to 3,048 metres will also have expanded drilling fluids capacity, a 1,000-tonne capacity hoisting system and living quarters for up to 200 personnel. The expected construction cost of the rig, including commissioning and system integrated-testing and excluding capitalized interest, is approximately US$745 million.

Second MISC tanker hijacked

Malaysia’s MISC Bhd, the world's biggest owner of LNG tankers has announced that its chemical tanker the Bunga Melati 5 was hijacked on Friday when sailing close to the designated security corridor off the Yemen coast.

The vessel was enroute from Yanbu to Singapore with a cargo of 30,000 tonnes of petrochemicals at the time of the incident. Although the authorities have been informed of the incident, no further information regarding the status of its 46 crew members has been released. This is the second successful seizure of an MISC vessel in August, with the latest attack following the August 19 hijack of the Bunga Melati Dua in the Gulf of Aden. The company has since announced a casualty involving a Filipino crew member incurred during the boarding of the vessel by the Somalian pirates responsible.

Cochin Shipyard to build Small Ship Division

Cochin Shipyard, India, has gained the Union Government’s approval to create a Small Ship Division in the yard.

The project is expected to be completed by mid 2009, and would undertake concurrent construction of small commercial ships with the aircraft carrier for the Indian Navy, which is currently under construction, officials said. Meanwhile, Cochin Shipyard currently has twenty offshore vessels in its order books for European/American clients.

Miclyn Express Offshore Takes Delivery

Following the delivery of three 120-ft. (36-meter) crew boats in 2007 and early 2008, Miclyn Express Offshore has taken delivery of the Express 61.

This 90-passenger crew boat is the fourth of the consecutively named Panamanian-registered vessels among the firm’s fleet. The Express 61, like its sisters, is powered by three 1350 hp Cummins KTA38 M2 main engines turning into Twin Disc MGX6690DC gears. With a total of 4050 hp, the BV-classed boats have a 21-knot cruising speed and a 26-knot maximum speed. Auxiliary power includes two Cummins 6BT5.9 DM powered generators. As were the earlier deliveries, the latest boat was built by Penguin Shipyard International Pte. Ltd. in their Singapore shipyard.
