A.P. Moller - Maersk Group reduces CO2 emissions by 9%

Health, Safety, Security and Environment Report 2008 shows improvements in terms of performance and reporting Copenhagen, 5 May 2009: A.P. Moller - Maersk Group is reducing its impact on the climate with a drop of 9% in CO2 emissions in 2008 compared to the previous year.

This represents a fall of 5 million tonnes CO2 and has been achieved through lower fuel consumption on ships and reduced flaring from platforms. The positive trend is continuing in 2009 in line with the Group’s new environmental strategy, which was decided last year and now being implemented throughout the various business units. The significant CO2 reduction is one of the main results in the “Health, Safety, Security and Environment Report 2008” – a report, which the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group publishes for the second consecutive year. The 2008 report contains a number of improvements, both when it comes to performance and reporting.” We have taken many important initiatives in 2008 and we firmly believe they will enhance improvements in our performance in coming years,” says Head of Group HSSE, Joseph Nazareth.

Royal opening for UK facility importing LNG from Qatar

London: The Queen and other senior members of the UK royal family will be attending the official opening of the South Hook LNG facility at Milford Haven next week.

Also attending will be members of the Qatari royal family – His Highness the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Her Highness Sheikh Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned and Her Highness Sheikh Hind Bint Hamad Al-Thani.Milford Haven mayor, John Roberts said: “The event on May 12 will certainly put the final seal on completion of the operation to provide a fifth of the UK’s gas supply from Milford Haven. The facility has already received three trial shipments of gas from the LNG facility in Ras Laffan, the industrial city located 50 miles north of Doha. SCA Announces New Chair/Vice Chair

The Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) announced that Herschel Vinyard, vice president at Atlantic Marine Holding Company, has been elected its new chair.

Mr. Vinyard takes the leadership role of the Council after two successful years that saw increased membership and an expansion of services provided by the SCA under the chairmanship of Steve Welch, CEO and President of Todd Pacific Shipyards. Chris Bollinger, executive vice president of Bollinger Shipyards, was elected to the position of vice-chair. The elections occurred during the Council’s annual Spring General Membership Meeting, held April 27 - 29, in Washington, DC. Past chair Steve Welch commented, "It was truly an honor to serve as chair of SCA. Over the past two years the association continued to grow its visibility in Washington and tackle a broad agenda. I have no doubt that Herschel Vinyard and Chris Bollinger will lead SCA to further success and new accomplishments.

Fincantieri, Boeing to build hovercraft fleet

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri and aerospace company Boeing have teamed up to win a new US Navy hovercraft fleet contract.

The agreement, which was awarded under the Sea Base-to-Shore Connector (SSC) programme, was announced in Washington, USA, on May 4. From an operational perspective, Fincantieri will be involved, through its American subsidiary, Marinette Marine Corporation. Boeing will be involved in the programme through Boeing Rotorcraft Systems. In the tender for the SSC programme, which will be launched in 2010, Marinette Marine will take the role of prime contractor for the vessels, which are to be built at its shipyards in Wisconsin, while Boeing Rotorcraft Systems will be responsible for propulsion and avionics. The ten-year SSC programme provides for the construction of 80 hovercraft, worth US$4 billion, to replace the Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC), which was introduced between 1984 and 2001.
