Dockers’ action in Belgium leads to reprieve on five-point plan
Targeted industrial action by dockers in Belgium over employers’ inclusion of a controversial “five-point plan” in bargaining negotiations has won an agreement to put the proposal on hold.
The workers represented by two ITF-affiliated unions - ACV-Transporten Communicatie and the Belgische Transportarbeidersbond (BTB) - and the trade union federation, Algemene Centrale van Liberale Vakbonden van België, took part in stoppages on 8 June. Antwerp, Ghent and Zeebrugge were affected.The dock workers were in dispute over port employers’ insistence on including a five-point plan in the workers’ collective bargaining negotiations for 2009/2010. The plan includes provisions to: hire workers several times a day, rather than for every shift; change the functions of some dock workers so that they no longer have “registered docker” status; reduce docker-specific social security allowances when work is not available and cut weekend and night-time working allowances. The plan would seriously impact on the dockers’ working conditions, as the employers attempt to force workers to bear the brunt of the economic crisis.

China Eyes 35% Share of Global Shipbuilding by 2011
China is seeking to expand its share of the global shipbuilding industry to more than 35 percent by 2011, aiming to raise production to 50 million tons by then, the State Council said in a detailed industry stimulus plan.
The plan includes government support for qualified companies pursuing listings and issuing bonds. The cabinet also said it would expedite the process of setting up an industry investment fund.Financial institutions will be urged to boost credit to shipbuilders and support mergers and acquisitions in the industry. Domestic buyers of long-range ships will benefit from the stimulus plan with financial support from the government, which at the same time is trying to reduce overcapacity. Currently, Chinese shipyards have a combined production capacity of 28.81 million DWT, accounting for 29.5 percent of the world's total, official figures showed. China’s shipbuilding industry has struggled with plummeting orders and overcapacity since the economic crisis triggered a collapse in Chinese trade.

New Escort Vessel for the U.S. Navy
After 54 years of building only commercial vessels, Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, has delivered its first high-speed patrol boat for the federal government.
The 64-foot screening escort vessel, with the mission of securing high-value Naval assets, will be operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. The all-aluminum boat features a C. Raymond-Hunt-designed deep-V hull, with a CPI Marine fender system, and is powered by twin MTU diesel engines and connected to Hamilton water-jets. Top speed is over 30 knots. The pilothouse on a flush deck, with forward-leaning front windows, leads to the forecastle, equipped with a head, galley, berths, and lockers.Read More

MSDS requirement for fuel deliveries from 01 July 2009
With effect from 1 July 2009, SOLAS Reg VI/5-1 will require marine fuel suppliers to provide your ship crew, prior to delivery, with a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each type of oil fuel to be loaded to the ship.
The MSDS contains instructions on safe onboard handling of the corresponding fuel product. To facilitate air transportation of fuel samples to DNVPS and other fuel testing labs, airlines are also requiring MSDS to be included in the dispatch documentation. Your chief engineer should either attach the MSDS on the outside of the sample carton box, together with the Proforma Invoice and Airway Bill, or pass these threedocuments to the freight forwarding agent.As with the current practice, the DNVPS Chief Engineer's Form and the Bunker Delivery Note (BDN) must be placed inside the sample carton box before dispatch.

The 10,900DWT tanker, named ‘T. Gönül’, measures 131 metres in overall length and 18.9 metres at the beam. The construction of ‘T. Gönül’ started in December 2007. The vessel was then launched on October 23 2008. The vessel can achieve a service speed of 14.1 knots at 85 percent MCR.
