Koreans nab Chinese shipbuilding spy

The Korea Times reported that Busan authorities have recently arrested a Chinese national for stealing core research technology on crude drill platforms.

The apprehended man works for a US classification society in Korea. This is the first time that South Korea will prosecute a foreigner in the name of “technology thievery”. The 35 year-old Chinese man was sent to a Samsung Heavy Industries yard located in the city of Geoje-si. Korean Authorities claim that he illegally copied over 1,540 documents concerning the technology about deep-sea crude drilling platforms and LNG ships to his own laptop. Samsung has spent over ten years, and millions of dollars on these technologies, besides the 3,000 personnel employed to conduct the research. Though the Chinese man is employed by a US classification society, he went to the Samsung yard, following orders issued by a Chinese state-owned shipping company. According to Korean media, there are another two Chinese workers in Samsung and Hyundai under suspicion for stealing shipbuilding technologies about large capacity container ships and LNG ships. Since 2004, Korea has dealt with six cases of crime concerning foreign business spies.
