Indian ship canal project likely to miss deadline

The Sethusamudram ship canal project in Tamil Nadu is likely to miss the October 2008 deadline with only 25 percent of the work completed so far.

Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project would link the Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar between India and Sri Lanka by creating a shipping channel through the shallow sea, and through the island chain of Adam's Bridge. This would provide a continuous navigable sea route around the Indian Peninsula. Due to shallow waters, Sethusamudram makes the navigation of larger ships through the Palk strait extremely prohibitive, and larger vessels have had to navigate around Sri Lanka to reach India' eastern coast. The progress of the canal has however been impeded by petitions against the canal still pending in courts. The Sethusamudram project was sanctioned in June 2005 and is a major shipping infrastructure project. When completed, the channel would save some 785km and 30 hours of sailing time for ships to reach India’s eastern coast from the west side.
